The night before the tragic events of September 11th, I was on the BBC in London tuning into the now deceased John Lennon. He was anxiously pacing up and down and most agitated. He said that even though he was a legend, it seemed that people were not following his message of peace and he said to me: "Come on, I would have hoped it lasted at least 50 years from the time of his death." I just took that in a general sense and did not question him further and he did not give any more information. The next day, I was shocked, numbed and horrified as everyone else at what took place. The depth of sadness I have felt and the empathy I have undergone has been almost without parallel. Like everyone else I was not looking for these events to happen. I have always believed that change can come without pain. I still do but there are many of us that do not know this still. What happens next is very much up to each and every one of us. We can and will all make the difference. We need to recognize that there are people around the world who are so opposed to our way in the western world that they are prepared to sacrifice their own lives and kill other innocents in their cry to be heard. We each need now to turn and look inside of ourselves, at our own pain and anger, at the sense of injustice that we still have not yet voiced, cleared or healed, for each and every one of us are connected and what happened on Tuesday is the refection of the unrest and unresolved in each and every one of us. Yes, the people responsible must be brought to justice and there is no excuse for what they did. But they need to be punished, not a whole people or a whole nation for the actions of a few. It's important that we each realize this. It's important to not only realize this but to act. Our heads of government and heads of State are there because we put them there. They will act in the way the people want or believe the people want. Let not the anger of some incite the rest of us to act in a way that creates mass loss of control and brings more violence and needless death. We can write letters. We can file petitions. We can talk calmly to our neighbors, friends and children. We need to head in the direction of peace and communication with all people, all nations, listen to the grievances and find ways to make the hurts and angers right. Not one of us is helpless. We can each separately and together make a change, a good change and a lasting change. Each time someone is killed or dies so dies or is killed a part of us. Meanwhile the pain and horror of what has happened cannot be undone. I am not asking anyone to forgive but I am asking that we each look at the anger, the hurt, the pain and fear in our own selves, in our own families and our own homes, and heal that now. We can each send out love and light and peace for all who have lost their lives and have suffered, in this recent tragedy and other tragedies the world over. We can strengthen our resolve that good can and will come from all that has happened so far, and realize now that this is our world and our reality, and that we - each and everyone of us - can bring change and decide what happens next. We can each say and mean "No more pain" and believe that it can be so. Please share your thoughts, feelings and opinion with us. We have opened a new Public Forum and invite you to participate.
