So we've been told

Line

It all began 2500 years ago. The Greeks started to define the universe with theories and treaties. First Zeno of Elea wrote an essay on Discontinuity. In modern words, Zeno sustains that reality is a succession of frames all independent of each other, all unique. One hundred years later, Aristotle contested Zeno's statement and presented reality as Continuity, bringing the concepts of time and space that are still today dominating human kind. Each new step in Science, from here, brought more and more concepts, introduced as theories.

In the early 18th century, Newton arrived to the conclusion that the universe is a mechanical clock reducing Reality to a machine created by a highly sophisticated engineer in Mechanics. Since Newton, we are told that all that is observed can be explained using simple to complex mathematical formulas.

There is no doubt that the Newtonian world view, with its doctrine of materialism and the clockwork Universe, has contributed immensely to advance of science… But there is equally no doubt that it has also contributed in large part to alienating human being from the Universe they inhabit. [Paul Davies and John Gribby, The Matter Myth]

There is just a problem. Mathematics is not an exact and absolute science. Within its own parameters, Mathematics works. Thus it only defines reality within its parameters. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc., all Sciences for centuries have been telling us how reality is. Let's remember that what we have been told is true and so only within very specific parameters. So how is reality beyond these parameters?

The philosopher Thomas Kuhn has argued that scientists build their conception of reality around certain specific "paradigms". A paradigm is not a theory as such, but a framework of thought - a conceptual scheme… From time to time in the history of ideas, a shift occurs in the basic paradigm. When this happens, not only do scientific theories change, but the scientists' conception of the world changes as well. That is what is happening now. [Paul Davies and John Gribby, The Matter Myth]

The New Physics since the 1920's have been looking forward. They just could not and still cannot look at an electron, eye to eye, straight ahead and steady. They found out that just the trying to look at an electron affects its speed and location. They discovered that "things" can be particles and waves at the same time, the light is one of them. How about that! We are not really sure we know what light is today, however, we are still told that the Speed of Light is our limit! The speed of what, exactly? Quantum Mechanics, a strong movement in contemporary science, is looking back at Zeno of Elea, and 2500 years later answers to Aristotle.

Quantum mechanics appears to describe a universal order that includes us in a very special way. In fact, our mind may enter into nature in a way we had not imagined possible… Perhaps much of what is taken to be real is mainly determined by thought… The order of the universe may be the order of our own minds. [Fred Alan Wolf, Taking the Quantum Leap]

Science is just one part of our conceptualization of reality. Human Sciences also contribute highly to our perception of reality. Following Newton's concept of the universal clock, Human Sciences have been looking at life as a complex and structured mechanism as well organized as the physical universe where it belongs. Every behavior is catalogued into a corpus of behaviors all assembled into a perfect and logical development of events/situations. Each scene belongs to a bigger picture also analyzed as a sequence of events all clearly identified and associated together. Dysfunctional behaviors, stress, obsessions, depressions, you name them. Egos are classified by types. Even dreams! Dictionaries of Dreams, Symbols are available everywhere, as an intent to reduce our higher self to a logical and catalogued conception of reality. Of course behavior patterns exist. Astrological signs too. But they exist until we decide to stop following them. Human Sciences have reinforced the original concepts of time and space by reducing life to small universal clocks preprogrammed by Nature (another universal clock), and running from birth to death. Human Sciences also have been defining reality within its own parameters. By accepting the concepts of birth and death, existence has been reduced to a merely mathematical formula: L = D - B (life = date of death - date of birth).

Literature that has been for centuries a source for expansion and enlightenment does not escape. Myths, legends, symbols, and metaphors have been catalogued too. Each one is reduced to a static picture, and in complete harmony within the parameters of human concepts.

Concepts, which have been proved to be useful in ordering things easily, acquire such an authority over us that we forget their human origin and accept them as invariable. [Albert Einstein]

By believing that all we see, hear, read, feel, and sense is as we have been told, we reduce our own and personal perception to a logical and well structured Newtonian world, like wearing glasses that reduce your vision. Today Sciences are very close to a break through. More and more of our preconceived ideas and forever believed theories do not work. Instead of ignoring them, "not seeing them", science is looking at the anomalies. There is no need to wait for them. There is no need to rely on anyone to truly know and perceive reality as it is. There is no need to accept and not to question.

We have been accepting what we have been told for centuries, repressing our own feelings when we know that "it does not feel right". We've been accepting because we have been told that all we need to know to be successful is to learn everything at school, as far as you can go. Sciences, on the other hand, are now saying they can't really explain. So what do you make of that?
