1. Change by Petrene Soames...

I often get mail from people in jail. Many times they write because they are lonely and want to have someone out there. I do answer each letter and try to find some positives for these people, just like for everyone else. A theme that comes up over and over is the way they tell me that they grew up in dysfunctional homes and that most have spent more time in jail than out. They write of their experiences in the outside world after spending many years in prison. Mostly they seem to find it impossible to adjust and to accept change. They find society strange; everyone seems to have family, friends and wives. They feel very isolated and often find it difficult, even impossible, to get a job. Many go back to jail after a short period of time on the outside. One of the frequent questions I am asked is: "Is this were I am supposed to be? Is this where I belong?" It might seem amazing to us on the outside that a human being could imagine seriously that jail is where they belong. However when we look more closely and try just for a moment to imagine being locked up for 23 hours a day in solitary in a very small space with concrete floors and every move regimented, year after year, it's easy to see how one could loose touch with oneself and reality could become very small indeed.

I am not making any judgments at all on these men or the system that we use for punishment of crime. What I am wondering is how long it might take before we - society as a whole - really deal with our issues such as poverty, abuse, discrimination, and escapist activities such as drugs and alcohol? When will we heal and when will we see that it is important to do so? Some of these men that write to me want change. A few are ready for it, yet how difficult change seems to be to accept.

We know that walls are not the only things that make a prison. Many of us on the outside are incarcerated in self-made prisons, the ones we have constructed ourselves through shame, anger, guilt and fear. Do we find change any easier to accept? I hope I have brought some clarity and answers to the question of change and of self-healing in my book "The Essence of Self-Healing", because without any doubt change and healing have to start with each and everyone of us, regardless of our situation and status. The book will be officially realized in March 2001 and it is my dream that everyone hears about it and has access to it so that they can use the simple exercises to re-connect with themselves, be freed by the simple knowledge and understanding of how we perceive ourselves and our surroundings, and finally unlock the doors of segregation and isolation of whatever prison one might be locked into to find health, happiness and wholeness.

If anyone out there would like to help with this dream, feel free to order a copy of "The Essence of Self-Healing" today and gift the book to someone that you know who is right now in a correctional center of their own, or donate it to your local prison for all of these men and women who need also to get back in touch with themselves and find health and happiness.

Exclusive autographed copies of The Essence of Self-Healing are available online (click here). Or if you prefer, just call 281.363.9983 today.

"I've found The Essence of Self-Healing truly enjoyable. Petrene's explanation of self-healing concepts is very clear and simple. There are many books that discuss our part in creating our illnesses and that we can heal them, but Petrene includes actual exercises to help heal body and emotions that are very easy to do. All together, this is one of the most useful self-help books I've read." ~ Michelle Pipkin - Houston, Texas

2. Nothing is only as it seems... Excerpt from The Essence of Self-Healing

Line

Have you ever been away from home, for say a week or 10 days, and noticed that everything looks and feels different when you return? You may notice objects and shapes that you had stopped noticing before. So to take a break from your present reality, to step out somehow is a good way to get a fresh perspective and to see things as new, or should I say, to see things in the present moment and more of how they actually are. When you are very young, your perception is very different. As small children, we revel in the imagination. But for most of us there comes a point, often starting when we begin school, where we begin to be taught what is real and what is not. We are taught by people doing a job, whether they believe or not in the concepts of the reality they are teaching. Most often, our parents go along with this process. An element of fear drives everyone involved, as no one wants the child not to be able to fit into the accepted reality by which we all live. What might be called an overactive imagination in children is deemed "undesirable," even if the words are not expressed as such. We are taught to be focused in the here and now, to have a firm grip on reality, and to be able to work with the mind in logical directions and patterns. These are all goals to be achieved and then praised for having achieved them. Yet at the same time, we see parents, teachers and others struck with a sense of awe when a child comes out with a statement which is deemed profound yet makes no logical sense. Even though these adults are perpetuating the importance of logical concepts, just for a moment they come back again to be in touch with themselves, as they listen with wonder to a child's profound, wise and magical thoughts. A child's imagination is often seen as wondrous, enjoyed from time to time, but is many times stifled and kept firmly in its place. It is no surprise that as adults many of us have difficulty in letting go and allowing our imagination to run free when we do give ourselves that freedom.

A child's reality is full of colors and vibrations, unformed thoughts all going on at the same time. And it is the same for all of us as adults, even if we are not aware of it. In early childhood it is clearer, simply because before a certain age is reached, and the mind begins to "make sense" of the fabulous and rich array of senseless matter, we see things how they are. The sense comes into play as we begin to learn, and are taught, that this is black and this is white. From then on, we accept that what we believe is order. In many ways, we stop looking and seeing. We no longer really look at a chair or a flower. We have no need to. We already believe we know exactly what it is. We have been told what it is and then later have told ourselves many times just what that object is, so we stop looking. Then we begin to believe that nothing is new, that there is nothing to look at. It could be many years later when perhaps for a moment we step out of our conditioning and happen to notice that a flower is giving off a light or subtle energy, that it feels and moves, and is very much alive. Then we are once again delighted and somehow surprised that we did not notice it before, yet this flower was always there to be noticed. We had just stopped looking.

Each and every day we have a choice of how to be and how to perceive reality. Yet most of the time we just go along with life and are not particularly aware. Reality even becomes boring and usual, made stale by custom, and also totally solid somehow. We may even feel imprisoned by that solidness. We search for things out there, things that are different and have other meanings, not even noticing all that is around us and before our very own eyes, because we simply stopped looking and seeing a long time ago. We grow also to see our lives and ourselves in very fixed ways. We grow to believe what we see is the sum total of us and how everything is. We become blasé. At times our perception can become so narrow that what we see is a very small picture indeed.

3. Petrene's US National Tour: Spring 2001

Line

Here is the list of the cities that Petrene will be visiting in April 2001 during her US National Tour:

  • Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio
  • Denver, Boulder, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Vegas
  • San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco
  • Portland Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta, New York

We are planning to do book signings, lectures or workshops, radio and television, and newspaper. If you live in one the cities above and would like to help us organizing the Tour, here are the things we are looking for:

1. Two largest bookstores in town (part of national chains)
2. One of the largest independent bookstore.

These do not have to be New Age stores. However, if there is a large New Age bookstore, that would work too.

3. Two radios and televisions (or more) where we could have Petrene interviewed. If there is a Radio or TV show in particular that you think would be interested in our topic (Self-Healing, Awareness), that would be a plus.
4. Any major newspapers and local magazines (even the free ones) where we could place an interview, a short article or an event announcement.

We also need a new age, holistic health center, fund raising event or something along those lines where Petrene can present a workshop, and possibly give some personal consultations.

Please contact us at information@petrene.com with your ideas and suggestions or call 281.363.9983.

4. Regression: Therapy and Experience by Petrene Soames

Line

Regression - to move backwards in time and experience the past - is an amazing thing! You can clear your mental built-up negative patterns. For instance, if as a child you were always told that you were stupid or have been abused, even though the adult now might be relatively together and successful, you are left with the doubt. Maybe you always feel that you have to give 110% when 80 would do. With Regression, you can go back to negative times where patterns begin and clear them. Regression therapy even clears physical illnesses that manifest in the present but are coming from the past time, even past life. Regression is invaluable then as a healing and clearing tool.

It is also though wonderful as a way to experience past time and reconnect with great loves, families and friends, to realize these ties of love that endure through time and space and cannot be broken. I was reminded of this recently. I gave a consultation to a single woman with no children. I noticed that she had a little boy with her throughout the session. I knew that he was her son, but did not feel he was from this time. Then she had a Regression a few weeks later. The session went well and she cleared many issues. But one of the greatest things that I witnessed was when she traveled back in time to a European country. She was a lady of means, married with one son whom she adored. She described him exactly as I saw him previously. She became again a mother. She talked to her son, touched him and hugged him, and breathed all through her body feelings of total unconditional love. She had never experienced such feelings in this lifetime. But in going back, she connected once again with that part of her that is and has been a mother. It was wonderful to watch the transformation.

This is just a small example of what can be done and what is there for us all to experience. The possibility exists for each and everyone to experience the different facets of ourselves that we may not be aware of in our present time. It's important to remember that in the realization, acceptance and understanding of our own uniqueness and diversity, we do also find our own great strengths.

5. Vegan Recipe by Etal: Eggplant with garlic sauce... Oh boy!

Line

All the ingredients listed below should be easy to find. Take the recipe as a base, and use your imagination to make it even better!

You need...

  • 1/2 cup of oil
  • Lots of garlic, I use 3 heads; Smash them!
  • 1 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 or 4 tablespoons of regular flour
  • 1/4 dry white wine [optional]
  • Some soy sauce (about 3 tablespoons)
  • 4 cups of vegetable broth (broth is a plus!)
  • Some sea salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon yeast extract (Marmite or Veggie Mite) [optional]
  • 1 eggplants cut in small pieces (peel them if you wish before)

Putting everything together...

  1. Heat some oil in a large fry pan and slightly sauté the eggplants. Then leave them on a side.
  2. Heat some oil in a saucepan and fry the garlic on very low heat. Let the garlic cook for about 10 minutes, then add the onions and let them cook for another 5 minutes or so.
  3. Sprinkle the flour on top and get it well mixed with the garlic and onions.
  4. Add the wine and bring to boil (on medium heat) constantly stirring with a spoon (use a wooden spoon so you don't burn yourself).
  5. Then add the vegetable broth and bring to boil. Keep stirring! Then lower the heat and let it cook for 5 to 10 minutes. The mixture should get thicker. If it does not, add some cornstarch previously mixed in a little bit of water or vegetable broth.
  6. Add soy sauce and marmite.
  7. Add salt, pepper.
  8. Finally, in a large pan, combine the eggplant and the sauce together and let it simmer for a few minutes. Then let it stand for a while.

Serve with regular or basmati rice. Keep it for a few days; it gets better!
