1. A choice to Heal [Part 1] by Petrene Soames

Time and time again we have observed the body's own healing mechanisms. For example, when we cut ourselves or suffer insect bites, our body heals with little or no outside help. We also hear many stories of people who have recovered from "incurable" diseases against all odds. Without a doubt, our body has its own self-healing mechanisms. We may have been told this in a vague and abstract way, but few of us have explored this truth in depth. Although there are people who successfully use self-healing, at the present time they are a minority. Two simple reasons illustrate why this is so. First, as individuals, we have been subjected to conditioning that makes us doubt the fact that we can heal ourselves. We are often discouraged by the belief that self-healing is a difficult or complex process or that strict regimes must be followed to ensure success. Second, although we might suspect that we all have the inner knowledge of how to heal ourselves, we may still believe that it is beyond our comprehension to access this knowledge, imagining we must undertake a journey of many long years in self-study. So instead, most of us stay ruled by our own fear, shame and pain.

Self-healing is not a major part of our world because we give it little space and accept many different concepts, percepts and beliefs instead. In order to accept healing, wholeness and perfect health, we will need to recognize our responsibility for the presence of imbalance within our lives and ourselves.

Challenging our thinking…
Much of our reality has been created and endorsed by philosophers and scientists hundred of years ago. We look upon them as "great thinkers," never presuming that we have the mental capacity to go beyond their established thinking. We learn belief systems, theories and facts and are rarely invited to challenge them. Few of us ever do. It is understandable that, with our conditioning and acceptance of what we have been taught, only a few people truly open their minds, explore their own awareness, and discover realities beyond the limitations of what has previously been thought. Often people tend to accept that "there is nothing new under the sun." This is not necessarily true, and can be viewed as a mental block that prevents us from seeing beyond it. It's important that during the self-healing process we recognize these blocks in our thoughts, beliefs and creativity. Through the true and real answers that you have within yourself, you can open the doorway to your own limitless realizations and realities. After all, there are no real experts on what is real and what is not, only a billion different opinions. And yours is as valid as everyone else's.

As we move into the third millennium, our thinking will be challenged again and again when we see that great seers and prophets from the past have predicted much that does not actually take place, and that scientific and medical hypothesis are no longer considered true. Our perception of the world is not fixed and the scientific theories that explain it are constantly changing. Who can we begin to believe then? We will have to turn inward and begin to believe in ourselves and discover all of which we actually are. We can then begin to realize that suffering is not our only path or duty. It's more like a record that has been played over and over. But there are other tunes to play. Venturing beyond our present time and our present beliefs about who we are, we still have much to discover about ourselves. Teachers and helpers along the way can and will be found, not only from the outside, but also within ourselves.

When we view our world as it now appears, we can travel the depressive, but also realistic, route. Millions of people still exist in poverty, even in affluent societies. Over twelve million children in the United States go hungry, and many of them are homeless. Ignorance and violence thrive as does war, which it would seem is a vast source of entertainment on television. But we can also choose to look from another perspective. So much is changing every day. The most wonderful things are happening. Advances are being made. Illumination and love is thriving in even the darkest of places. Communication has expanded. Subjects that were once taboo are now being more openly discussed. Millions of people want positive change and are prepared to work to that end for themselves and for future generations. We need to seriously ask ourselves now: Do we want positive change in our lives, to be happy and whole, to love and be loved, and to experience joy? Do we want to experience the fulfillment of our potential? Are we ready to heal?

"The writing is simple and clear, sprinkled with profound insights and positive life-changing tips." BookPage

"I certainly agree with Petrene Soames that we must learn to listen to our bodies and go inside to find our answers, as opposed to giving control to our doctors. Had I listened to my neurologists I'd be sitting in a wheelchair today. I recommend The Essence of Self-Healing." Betty Iams, Journey to Wellness.

So why don't more people use self-healing? First of all they are a lot of more people using self-healing than we realize. But for the others, there are two primary reasons why self-healing is not so normal:

  • The first is a lack of know how. People do not know what to do.
  • The second reason is a lack of self-belief. They aren't sure that they could do; somehow people imagine that it's easy for me, like I am special or different somehow, forgetting how special and different we all really are. Some people think that self-healing means an instant cure and indeed this can happen. But if you have been ill for many years, the chances are you have been using other treatments for many years. So be prepare to give self-healing a fair chance.

Before I wrote The Essence of Self-Healing, I wondered if there was room or need for another book on self-healing. I researched the subject and found that there was because many of the books already written are limiting, or written from specific points of view. They often contain terms and philosophies that seem too much out there and up in the air and include regimes that take up too much time or are too complicated. So I decided to bring the subject down to earth, and to present the subject and bring answers in simple words and terms that people would be able to relate to and easily understand. This book is different also because it takes into account the fact that we are each so very different and that there is not only one way. Besides health appears so complicated nowadays. It's time to get back to simplicity. Remember, using simplicity does not mean that you are being naïve. It just means deciding to use a way that works and saying "enough hard work and enough pain".

Why do we get sick?

We are all different and we all have different reason for becoming sick. It is not just because there is a virus going around that you have to catch it. We need to look at underlying problems, trust me there is always a root cause; no one ever just gets sick. Loss of faith, hope and believe in life and yourself, feeling trapped and stuck, constant abuse even in mild forms, negative thoughts and images, beating ourselves up, for not being focused enough, good enough successful enough, general poor self image, feeling lonely, fearful and staying with situations where there seems no way out. Sometimes we need to go back to go forward and heal the past. Chapter 7 shows you how to do this. You can heal the past without complicated techniques and therapists. Some of us expect pain. We have all heard the "no pain no gain" expression, but pain is not normal. And we don't need to become ill, out of shape and out of balance.

Will Petrene be speaking in your city? Go to http://petrene.com/events to see her full schedule of presentations from March 17 to May 6. Petrene's media appearances will be published at http://petrene.com/events/shows.shtml. We will indicate when the shows are broadcasted on the Internet.

For those of you living in areas not included in Petrene's tour, we will post a live recording of her presentation when we return (May 15).

Remember, if you can't buy the book (or if you did already), go to your public library and ask them to order it. Isn't it time people around you realize that they are in control of their own health, and not victims of multi-millionaires companies anxious to sell them yet another product! Please help us make sure that everyone has access to this knowledge.

4. Vegan recipe: Creamy Spinach Rice

Line

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of cooked rice (or less). I prefer basmati rice personally. It has a wonderful flavor, light to digest and cooks very quickly. After cooking the rice, wash it in cold water and drain well. DON'T overcook the rice.
  • 1 small onion
  • garlic (as much as you like)
  • 1/4 cut of thinly chopped carrots (I use baby carrots)
  • 1 yellow squash (thinly chopped)
  • A handful of sesame seeds or crushed almonds (I like the crunchy bits!)
  • 1 1/2 cup of cooked spinach (feel free to use a can instead of fresh spinach)
  • 2 or 3 tablespoons of "Tofutti Better than Cream cheese". Our local Kroger supermarket has been carrying this product for a while now. I strongly suggest you demand it from your local store!
  • Salt, pepper (you decide how much)

Let's put everything together...
So you cooked the rice, drained it and now it's cooling down on a side. In a large pan, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil. Be patient; use a medium low heat. After 2 or 3 minutes add the carrots. Sauté for another 3 minutes and add the yellow squash. Sauté another 2 minutes. Don't overcook the veggies. Again, I like the crunchy bits. Add the almonds or sesame seeds.

Now, add the spinach (cooked and chopped) with no juice. Raise the heat and cook for 2 minutes or so. Then add the "Better than Cream cheese" and enough spinach juice (or vegetable broth) to "dissolve" the "cream cheese". Avoid getting to a boil. When you get a nice creamy consistency, add the rice. You decide how much rice you want to add! Then add your spices.

Serve hot!
