February 2002 Issue

Go Back

Dear Reader:

Welcome to our February 2002 Openings Issue. The days are getting brighter now and Spring is not far around the corner. We trust you had a great Valentine's Day. If you did and would like to see it as a national holiday, we invite you to send a letter to your Senator here in the USA. Click here for a list of the US Senators by State. Together we can make the USA the first country in the world to celebrate Love as a National Holiday. Wouldn't that be great?

In the Chinese calendar we are now in the year of the Horse and time appears to be speeding up more than ever. Remember, "anything is possible", "nothing is ever only as it seems" and truly "there are no mistakes".

We hope you enjoy this issue and always look forward to your feedback, comments and stories.

P.S. A big thanks to everyone who wrote letters to the Oprah Show. We will keep you posted.

1. The myth of Good and Bad Food

Line

We hear constantly about good and bad foods. We've become obsessed with reading food labels. If you ever hear a professional nutritionist speak, you might well come to the conclusion that there is little left on the planet that is safe or good to eat. It is easy to realize that we have at one time or another each bought into this idea: "the good food and bad food syndrome".

The lists of good foods and bad foods are constantly changing. For example, chocolate might taste great but was considered in the past to be bad. Now, however, we are told it can be good for us. When you see how much data is available and realize that evidence can be found both for and against almost everything, it puts the whole matter into perspective.

Since the mid 1980's, many people have bought into the idea that the food we consume does not have all that we need to stay well and healthy. The results are quite alarming; individuals are often consuming vast amounts of vitamins, minerals and food supplements, believing that you can't have too much of a good thing. Unfortunately the truth is rather different. Nancy Deutsh, in an article published by Reuters Health on March 2000 reported that a toddler with mental retardation who was undergoing an unsupervised mega-vitamins and mega-mineral treatment died of magnesium poisoning. Laurie Drake, in another article (Allure Magazine) titled "Too much of a good thing" presents the case of Susan, a 35-years old accountant who suffered an overdose of vitamins. These are just two small examples. There are countless of others like Susan who are getting sick on vitamins, a nutritional paradox of otherwise healthy people. "Vitamins are medicines like anything else, and in every medicine there is little poison" says New York City cardiologist Isadore Rosenfeld. She also points out that grossly exceeding recommended daily allowances can lead to everything from nausea, diarrhea, constipation to birth defects.

Unlike pharmaceutical firms, supplement companies in the USA are not required by law to report serious product problems to the government. On March 19, 2000, Guy Gugliotta reported in The Washington Post that "mounting evidence suggests that an increasing number of Americans are falling seriously ill or even dying after taking dietary supplements that promise everything from extra energy to sounder sleep". Two months later Gugliotta added to his research that "although some products may be helpful, the surge in supplements used by children and adolescents is causing rising alarm among pediatricians, children's health advocates and federal and state medical officials" as supplements are largely untested and unregulated and the short- and long-term impact of these substances is virtually unknown."

Because of advertising campaigns promoting 100% natural products, a lot of people feel reassured by the word "natural". The point is, whenever you take these products, you are giving your power and belief to a substance outside of yourself and not allowing you to discover your own healing thought process and your own body's healing abilities.

Each and every month, we are given new data on what is good and not good for us to eat and drink. It's almost impossible to keep up with so much information. What we need to do is to start now listening to our body and to ourselves, enjoy what we eat and drink and feel positively about our choices. Each one of us is unique and what's good for one may not be for another. The body is amazingly adaptable and it is possible to know what is right and will work for each of us, as simple as trusting our own thoughts and feelings. As the sayings go, "variety is the spice of life" and "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". Isn't it time to get back to the basics, then relax and enjoy a healthy relationship with our food?

When I first came to The Woodlands six years ago, I was startled at my first sight of an "opossum". It is a creature with quite a striking appearance, pink and white in color, a very long tail, a long snout with protruding teeth and quite large claws. Its looks are fascinating and to me the "possum" - as we call them here - looked like a throwback to the medieval times. The possum reminds you of a large rat. The animal is nocturnal so whenever I saw one late at night I would stand a little way back and watch as it went about its business. I grew to view it with first curiosity, then almost a reverence and finally one day I saw beauty in it.

Time passed by and the other day my possum experience continued. It was a day quite unlike any other day, one of those special days you have from time to time, one that puts everything into perspective. This particular morning I woke up and felt a surge of excitement. I had not slept enough and should have felt tired. But I didn't. So I jumped out of bed and just knew it was going to be a great day. It was a cool brisk morning, the sun barely up. I dressed warmly and started out for my usual "wake up and greet the morning" run. Just down the road I was stopped in my tracks by the sight of a large hairy possum, head down on the concrete hunched right in the center of the neighbor's driveway. I moved closer and looked into the creature's open eyes. There was no sign of blood anywhere. The possum was breathing but not moving. I knew it couldn't be all right, yet I felt that it was not in pain. I knew also it was dying. It seemed so unnatural there, in the bright light of day on the concrete floor. I wanted to move it on the soft grass nearby. A cat strolled past, head held high. She looked barely interested as she moved on past. I wanted to help but didn't know what to do. I just stayed there, crouched down with the possum, sending it mentally color and light. That seemed to help because for a moment it rallied round and stumbled a few steps, but then collapsed again.

A woman from another house came out and said that maybe it was asleep. I knew it was dying. She covered her ears and told me: "Don't say that. I can't bear an animal dying". I was a little taken back by the intensity of her reaction. Finally I noticed the wound with no blood from the underside of the possum, about an inch long. I left for my run and when I returned the possum had moved a few more inches. It was now on the edge of the grass. I stayed for a while and looked deeply into the creature's eyes. I immediately saw death and was catapulted in time to all the times that I had been dying first thing in the morning. I relived those moments. It was an amazing experience as if the clouds rolled back, a veil was lifted, the here and there, the now and then all mesh and molded together as one. Death I see clearly once again is a merging and interfacing of realities. The magic of the moment is breathtaking and I realize again that birth and death are moments and experiences of utmost clarity, very much the same, no line between them and as natural as the coming and going of the tides and the in and out of the breath itself.

Back to the house I called everyone I could think of. I wanted advice. I wanted to do something to help this possum. But I soon realized there was nothing to do, only be there with it as it died. I went back. I though about how difficult it is for us as human beings to sit back and be with the dying when there is nothing else that can be done. I placed a bowl of water as a final material gesture by the possum's side as if it might somehow be of use. Again I looked into the open eyes. This time I was transported and went willingly to what I can only describe as the "Majesty" of the possum's moments of its life. I was there with it foraging in The Woodlands, feeling the sun on my back as it comes up and touches us both. Then there was the darkness, the dead of night smelling the earth and the woods. I felt total peace and contentment. I knew clearly during that time that the possum felt me, saw me and was with me. I was so very much at one with the possum myself and all that is and everything that is part of the dying experience. I felt humble and joyful to have been there and a part of it

I moved away filled with awe and wonder. I went back later one final time. But even before I reached the spot I knew that the possum had died. I looked down at the body. I felt not a trace of sadness, just easiness. Everything was exactly as everything needed to be. I thanked again the possum, myself and the day for being there and the magic of it all. The day continued on and yet for a while time had stood still. And for that time, nothing in the universe has mattered more or been of more importance than "being" with the dying possum.
